Illustration *270: A design “problem” with multiple Requirement considerations. The implication is that we need to look for a set of Solutions (Design-Ideas) that satisfies all the Requirements simultaneously.

Notes
1. In Systems-Engineering, we are primarily concerned with the task of satisfying multiple Function, performance and Resource-Requirements, under given Conditions. We classify this as a “Design-Problem”.
2. Problems may be viewed as being in problem domains other than Systems-Engineering: for example, “research”, “management”, “marketing”, “political”, or “environmental”. However, Planguage offers a general method for supporting solving any problems. Planguage Specification-Language helps capture any Requirements. One or more Requirements (including any targets, Constraints, Assumptions, dates and locations) may constitute a Complete problem statement.
3. The problem with problems… is that even though we may solve a simple problem as outlined here, real problems have many more dimensions of performance and Resource (Cost) to consider simultaneously. A real problem is so Complex that we cannot figure it out very well in a pure Design-Process. We need to try out our Solutions step by step: seeing how each step works, and using the feedback from it to decide on the next incremental step to take. This is the approach of Evolutionary-Project-Management (Evo).
