Notes

1. The Specification-Writer (an SQC team member and also a Checker themselves), usually carries out the Edit Sub-Process on their own. If the Specification-Writer is not available, then someone else undertakes the editing task, and they are the Editor.

2. The primary input to editing is the Editor-Advice-Log, which is produced by the SQC team during the Specification-Meeting. Secondary inputs are all Documents, which participated in the SQC Checking Process, and any Notes (“scratchings”), which Checkers made but chose not to formally log.

3. The Editor reads the Issues in the Editor-Advice-Log and makes corrections wherever they find and agree that there are Defects requiring correction in the main specification. They can choose to correct far more Defects than were reported, based on the stimulus of the Sample of Defects presented to them. They can also choose to not fix things, which they judge are not Major-Defects. They should somehow try to bring the specification to an exit-able Defect Level.

4. Where the Authors or Process owners of any other Documents involved in the SQC are concerned, other reasonable Action has to be taken, such as sending out change requests. The Editor is at liberty to search (and take appropriate Action) for other Defects, not reported, anywhere in the specification set.

5. The Edit Process is reviewed, and ultimately approved, by the Team-Leader in an SQC Sub-Process called “Edit-Audit.” More detail can be found in [GILB93] (See “Editing” and “Follow up”).
